This project will expand the Truck Driving Program at Fox Valley Technical College, providing greater access through evening and weekend courses. The College will train displaced and underemployed workers as truck drivers, increasing the number of trained truck drivers available to the area by 40 per year.

The Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin Milwaukee Work Access Center will provide services to out of work males, lower-skilled, and low income individuals who are looking for jobs. With high unemployment in Milwaukee in particular, this program would provide a crucial boost to help these out of work individuals get back to work.

This project will provide the advanced manufacturing lab equipment necessary at Lakeshore Technical College to expand their Center for Manufacturing Excellence. Manufacturing is the largest employment sector in the area served by the College. By providing training with the newest technologies, the Center for Manufacturing Excellence will supply the community with high skilled workers, meeting the growing demand for qualified manufacturing workers in Wisconsin.

This project will create approximately 100 green jobs in solar energy in the Milwaukee area by preparing workers to design, install, and maintain solar technologies. The project also provides for the development and expansion of research in alternative energy sources. Federal funds will be used for programming and equipment for the College’s new Solar Jobs Training Center.

Recipient: Children's Hospital of Wisconsin and Health System

Federal funding for the Community Access to Pediatric Specialists via Telemedicine (CAPST) will provide statewide access to diagnostic assistance from pediatric specialists through a broadband-based network set up through the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. This technology will allow health care providers throughout the state to consult in real time with pediatric specialists on the most appropriate medical care in emergency situations.

This project will provide dental care for at-risk populations in the Chippewa Valley. The Chippewa Valley Free Clinic plans to expand current health services to include preventive dental care for people with no healthcare alternative. Funds will be used to renovate the clinic to provide dental care facilities.
Recipient: Concordia University School of Pharmacy

Amount Requested: $500,000
This project will provide funding to construct a new School of Pharmacy building and purchase equipment for the school, which is set to open in August 2011. Wisconsin is currently facing a dramatic shortage in pharmacists, and the Concordia University program seeks to train 100 new pharmacists annually to serve in rural and urban areas of Wisconsin with inadequate pharmacy services.

Dryhootch of America, Inc. provides peer-to-peer counseling services for veterans. This project will allow for the renovation of facilities and additional staff at the current location in Milwaukee. Funds will also support an expansion to four additional locations statewide.

This project will provide funds for the Hospital Sisters Health System to purchase and implement a Home Health Tele-Monitoring System. With this new system, nurses will be able to remotely monitor patients with known chronic medical conditions to reduce unnecessary hospitalizations and emergency room visits.

Marquette has a well-established program that provides clinical treatment and educational experiences to support oral health care delivery to underserved areas in Wisconsin. The Comprehensive Dental Outreach Program will provide training in advanced general dentistry, as well as provide dental care to underserved populations throughout the state, including both urban and rural communities.

The Rice Lake Area Free Clinic will provide healthcare for uninsured and underinsured people in rural areas of northwest Wisconsin. The clinic, which is scheduled to open in June 2010, will provide evening hours two days per month. This federal funding will purchase the equipment and pharmaceuticals necessary to expand the clinic’s operating hours to every Tuesday night.

St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital, a new 50-bed acute care hospital, will open in late 2011. In addition to providing standard inpatient and outpatient services, St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital seeks to provide diagnosis and treatment services for patients with stroke symptoms. Federal funds will be used to purchase a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) magnet. The MRI magnet is used to evaluate acute stroke patients.

This project will support a collaborative bachelor's degree in nursing, partnering with Blackhawk Technical College and the UW-Oshkosh School of Nursing. The program will address projected state nursing shortfall and current waitlists for these degree programs. The requested funding includes salaries and supplies.

Recipient: Alverno College

This program will create an afterschool and summer program to promote STEM studies for college-bound girls. The Girls Advanced Science and Math Academy is a two-year after-school and summer program that would recruit and prepare 80 girls from Milwaukee Public Schools for college studies in STEM subjects.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee is continuing to expand the SPARK program, an early literacy program that prepares young struggling readers to reach reading proficiency by the end of the 3rd grade. The SPARK program is a "wrap-around" approach to early literacy instruction in club-school partnership facilities. The program has demonstrated success; federal funding would support continuation of the program as it expands to serve more youth. The Club serves 6-18 year-olds in the City of Milwaukee, most of whom are from low-income, minority households.

The AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) program supports high school students who complete a college preparatory path and enroll in college. The program uses "small learning communities" and a rigorous curriculum to prepare students for college. The program places particular priority on serving students in the “academic middle,” who are capable of success in college with some additional supports. AVID currently serves 240 students and will use this federal funding to expand access to the program to 800 students in all four Madison Metropolitan School District high schools.

St. Norbert College is in the final stages of upgrading its science education facilities. In addition to improving the educational opportunities for undergraduate students at St. Norbert College, K-12 students and teachers throughout northeastern Wisconsin will also benefit from the school’s outreach activities. Federal support for this project would provide funding for Science Discovery Center supplies, instructional technology, and collaborative research experiences and hands-on STEM activities for K-12 schools. This phase will connect the Science Discovery Center, through the Internet, to K-12 schools that are unable to travel to St. Norbert for activities in the Center.

The Non-Traditional and Veteran Students with Disabilities Initiative at UW-Stevens Point seeks to target resources to veterans returning from combat, especially those with disabilities. Of the 8,700 students at UW-Stevens Point, 1,400 are non-traditional students, and 250 of those students are veterans. The Initiative seeks to provide support to students as they enroll in state and federal veteran education programs, identifying appropriate accommodations with qualifying students with disabilities. The Initiative also provides career development services and job placement assistance upon graduation. These services will result in increased retention and graduation rates among non-traditional and veteran students with disabilities.

This project will establish a Veteran's Center on campus where veterans can learn about services for themselves and their families. Western Technical College aims to help veterans successfully and seamlessly re-enter civilian life. Veteran enrollment at the College has grown by more than 1,000% since 2005, and currently number 1,060 – about one fifth of the veteran student population in the state. Federal funding for this project would allow the College to launch a Post-Service Plan for Veterans, including staff and additional academic, career, and social support for veterans and their families.
